Virtual reality and empathy

Empathy is important to be able to convince people of a need. If we feel it, we can understand it. The ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, both intellectually and emotionally.

As an organization or company, you may want to involve people in the feelings of a person or a group of people. For example, in social and societal problems such as mobbing, poverty, violence, etc. Or to let people feel more involved in a certain professional group, patient group or charity.

Virtual reality is the perfect medium to approach reality as closely as possible and to evoke empathy in people. Through this “immersive” (intensive) experience, by means of a VR-headset, one gets the feeling of being there themselves.

A lot depends on the quality of the story. If it appeals, people feel involved. Stories evoke emotions. And with emotions you create connection. By tapping into emotions, a story and its message stick better. Do something to attract and keep the attention. That is what you can achieve with storytelling and that is what we, at Kola Productions, are experienced and good at.

There are two VR techniques that work well for this.

1. VR video. Recording with a video camera on location. Trough of a 360- or 180-

degree camera this gives a realistic picture of reality, and you get the feeling of

being there. But you can’t be interactive in this. Production costs are relatively low.

2.  Computer generated virtual reality. The virtual environment is created in the

computer. And because the images are generated by the computer, there is also a

lot of freedom for interactivity, such as moving, relocation and making assignments.

Productions costs can increase as the images become more realistic and

interactivity increases.

We can realize high-quality VR productions for you with a good story.
